Introduction
Isopods are quickly becoming some of the most popular invertebrates for hobbyists. Whether you’re breeding rare Cubaris species or keeping dairy cows and powder blues, having the right enclosure makes all the difference. In this guide, we’ll explain how a 3D-printed enclosure can optimise humidity, airflow, and observation — far better than a converted food tub.
Why Traditional Tubs Fall Short
Many keepers start with takeaway containers or basic plastic boxes. While this may work temporarily, long-term success depends on consistency in ventilation, moisture retention, and substrate depth. These DIY options often lack visibility, control, and aesthetic appeal.
Our Favourite 3D-Printed Setup
The 25×18×30cm vivarium was designed with isopods in mind. It includes:
- Sliding front access
- Top and rear ventilation for airflow
- Deep base for layered substrate and leaf litter
Ventilation: The Balance of Air and Moisture
Too much ventilation and your enclosure dries out. Too little, and mould becomes an issue. Our printed designs use precisely spaced hex-grid vents to achieve micro-climate balance.
Lighting (Optional but Useful)
Most isopods don’t require light, but a small LED strip helps with visibility — especially if you’re observing for breeding or checking on moults. Our T5 wall mounts are too large for this setup, but custom light clips are coming soon.
Substrate and Microfauna
Use a mix of coco fibre, sphagnum moss, leaf litter, and rotting wood. Springtails are a great addition and can be boosted with a springtail riser for easy harvesting.
Feeding Access
Front access via the sliding panel means no lid-flipping and reduced stress for your isopods. Simply slide out the panel, drop in food, and close again.
Planting for Bioactive Setups
Try integrating small rooted plants such as:
These thrive in humid, low-light enclosures.
Conclusion
A properly designed enclosure doesn’t just make your isopods happy — it makes your life easier. Whether you’re managing rare colonies or common species, the right 3D-printed vivarium will help you maintain a healthy, bioactive habitat. Shop the full range of insect vivariums here.
