Isopod Substrates: What Works Best?

post_excerpt

Why Substrate Matters

Isopods spend their lives in and around substrate. It provides food, moisture, shelter, and breeding space. Choosing the right mix helps your culture thrive.

Ideal Base Mix

A standard mix contains:

  • Organic topsoil or coco fibre (base)
  • Leaf litter (structure and food)
  • Crushed oyster shell or cuttlebone (calcium source)

For moisture-loving species, add sphagnum moss and keep one corner wetter. Dry-tolerant species like powder oranges prefer airy, well-drained substrates.

Why Our Enclosures Help

The Display Vivarium Base is shallow but perfect for growing cultures. Its airflow keeps the substrate sweet-smelling and mold-free.

Quick Tips

  • Never pack the substrate too tightly
  • Spot-clean uneaten food
  • Refresh leaf litter regularly

Balanced substrate is the foundation of a happy isopod colony!
